The reaction that turns liquid from clear to black in an instant

Here’s another slice of chemistry that is sure to impress your your friends and family. It’s called the “iodine clock reaction” and once the reaction is complete, an indicator switched on that causes the liquid to suddenly change colour. It’s like magic, only real.

Items required to replicate this experiment:

  1. Sodium sulphite
  2. Citric acid
  3. Sodium iodate
  4. Starch pellets
  5. Measuring cup
  6. Measuring spoons
  7. Three glasses or beakers
  8. Stirring rods
  9. Safety gloves
